Mass PIL grant news
CSCR has met two of its important goals established as part of its PIL grant metrics-
• Final QAPP Acceptance by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection within the target date of July 1, 2007.
• Implementation of 2 research projects with local, state, and federal partners.

Obtaining final QAPP acceptance from the Mass DEP means that students who train with CSCR teachers are adhering to scientific procedures and methodologies that have been thoroughly reviewed and approved by professional scientists drawn from several state agencies. The photos capture students undergoing training, implementing field studies, and enjoying a little camaraderie.

The two featured research projects address questions raised by EPA, MassBays, and local town officials in regards to wetland habitat health, and nonpoint source pollution impacts on the health of Cohasset Harbor.

One project is also designed to train CSCR students and staff in the fluorometric determination of chlorophyll-a, an important indicator of microscopic plant growth often fueled by excessive nutrient from stormwater runoff contamination.

With support from Microsoft students and project partners such as chemist Christian Krahforst of the Mass. Bays National Estuary Program, students at CSCR are tackling some complicated issues that affect all cities and towns in our urban and suburban environments.

training, field studies, and enjoying a little camaraderie.

Teacher Laura Guiliano and student Jon Choi take a break from the tedious task of sifting field samples for macro-invertebrates, the creepy crawling critters and worms needed in health marsh ecosystems.

“Doc T,” Dr. Ann Thomae of CSCR instructs students in filtration procedures used for analyzing chlorophyll-a.

Student trainee Megan Richardson practices filtration techniques with the assistance of CSCR teacher, Annette Moore, while student Jon Choi looks on.
